Ioan Slavici (1848-1925) was a writer, journalist and Romanian teacher, member of the Romanian Academy. He came from a family of Transylvanian peasants. As a writer, he was guided by Mihai Eminescu. His most important works are the novel Mara and the short stories Moara cu noroc and Padureanca. As a journalist, he was controversial and was imprisoned five times in Austria- Hungary and Romania. His experiences as a prisoner were reflected in his memoirs Inchisorile mele. Moara cu noroc is one of the most valuable works of the genre in Romanian literature. In this tragic novel, the Transylvanian society from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century is depicted. The focus is on the psychological analysis of the main character, who degrades under the power of money. The novel Popa Tanda traces the life of a man, Trandafir the priest, from the school years to old age, showing a man's chance to achieve fulfillment in the world.

Moara cu noroc este una din cele mai valoroase creații de gen din literatura română. În această nuvelă tragică este zugrăvită societatea ardelenească de la sfârșitul secolului al XIX-lea și începutul secolului XX. Accentul este pus pe analiza psihologică a personajului principal care se degradează sub puterea banului. Nuvela Popa Tanda urmărește drumul în viață al unui om, preotul Trandafir, din anii de școală până la bătrânețe, prezentând șansa omului de a-și găsi împlinirea în lumea sa.
